What is Spinal Manipulation Therapy?
Spinal manipulation therapy (SMT) also known as chiropractic manipulation or adjustment, refers to a specific thrust or force applied to the vertebrae with the intent of correcting articular malposition of the spine, otherwise known as subluxation. SMT has been around for as long as 3000 years, dating back to ancient Chinese, Hippocrates, and the ancient Egyptians.
SMT is one of the most commonly used treatments for patients with low back pain and neck pain. There are however, many other musculoskeletal disorders and biomechanical disorders of the spine which can cause high levels of intolerable pain that can be relieved by SMT. A vast amount of complaints of acute and chronic pain are triggered by subluxation of the spine. Subluxation can be caused by many things such as: work, sports, posture, genetic structure, pathologies, and even the most unexpected things like getting up off the couch or out of bed at night to go to the bathroom.
Most people at some point in their lives will experience a form of subluxation. There are many different techniques used to target the various troubled areas depending on the patient’s particular complaint or complaints, and the practitioner’s assessment. Patients are assessed by manual diagnosis including vertebral position, vertebral motion, joint play, soft tissue and musculature changes.
Who can perform SMT and what are the benefits?
In today’s medicine trained specialist such as: chiropractors, osteopathic physicians, and naturopathic doctors can perform SMT. The benefits of SMT are significant, including the reduction of acute and chronic pain, joint stiffness, improvement in range of motion, muscle-tension headaches, migraines, and some neurological deficits caused by nerves being pinched causing numbness or tingling in the hands and/or feet.
