Prolotherapy Treatment

Prolotherapy Treatment can be Used to Treat Many Painful Injuries. Prolotherapy treatment is a non-surgical solution to many painful inuries, and it works. The pain management treatment causes the growth and formation of new ligament tissue in areas where it has become weak.

Prolotherapy uses a sugar-based solution which is injected into the ligament or tendon where it attaches to the bone. This will cause a localized inflammation in the weak area increasing the blood supply and flow of nutrients. This in turn stimulates the tissue to repair itself. This strengthens and tightens and thereby stabilizes the area.

The substances being injected are sugar water (dextrose), Lidocaine and/or Marcaine (local anesthetic) into the damaged ligament or tendon at the point where it attaches to the bone. As described previously, these injected substances produce an inflammatory response increasing blood flow strengthening, repairing and alleviating the pain in the targeted area.

What is Prolotherapy?

The term “Prolotherapy” was derived from “Proliferation Therapy” (growth, formation). It involves injecting non-pharmacological, non-active irritant solution into the body. Prolotherapy is a recognized non-surgical procedure that treats soft-tissue damage through the use of injections. The injections stimulate a local inflammatory response in a designated area which in turn stimulates the body’s own natural healing process. This healing process increases the blood supply sending more vital nutrients to the area which will repair and strengthen weakened or damaged cartilage, ligaments and tendons. Ultimately this will provide more joint support, and the alleviation of pain.

The History of Prolotherapy

Prolotherapy, also known as “Regenerative Injection Therapy” has been used for many years, even as early as the Roman times for the treatment of injured gladiators.  In the 1950’s Dr. George S. Hackett began performing injections of irritant solutions to repair injured joints.  In 1955 Dr. Hemwall and Dr. Hackett teamed up and started practicing what is now termed “prolotherapy”.  They both practiced for many years making great accomplishments in medicine.

Dr. Hackett and Dr. Hemwall unfortunately are now both deceased, but left behind one of the most encouraging alternatives to musculoskeletal surgery, “prolotherapy”.
