Acupuncture is a form of Chinese medicine which consists of thin needles being inserted into the skin targeting specific acupuncture points. Most of these points lie in specific meridians that correspond to an organ in the body. These meridians control the flow of “Qi”; a “life force”, or “energy flow” within any living thing. In Chinese medicine most human pathologies are determined by the flow of Qi. Patients may require stimulation in Qi as they may be deficient, or a decrease in Qi, as they may be in excess.

Points and Meridians

There are about 650 points and 20 meridians.  Many of these points are considered “extra points” which focus on specific issues. Needle insertion may be deep or shallow, depending on the target. The needle is very thin and almost painless.

Chinese medicine is very complicated and acupuncture is just a single modality. Acupuncture requires a great deal of training by the physician. The physician must have a good knowledge of the five element theory, the many different types of Qi, tongue and pulse diagnosis, and most importantly the various needling techniques. The needling techniques vary considerably based on whether or not a patient is in Qi excess or deficiency, and which corresponding organ or organs are being affected.
